The understanding of the three conventional genres of literature (poetry, drama and prose) always forms one's basic knowledge of the subject. From my experiences teaching literature, students often dread the subject, especially poetry, but my teaching encounters show that students do better when they have a reassuring, patient and creative minded teacher. My students have always enjoyed learning literature because I take them beyond the teaching of literary appreciation/devices and the conventional analysis of texts which is the common practices of most teachers of the subject. In this regard, my approach is quite different. I make my classes interactive by using the discussion method. Literature is a very subjective course and its understanding demands personal or subjective interpretations. Consequently, I get my students involved in the engagement of literary texts and inspire them to write as much as they read. Literature is beauty and beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.
