I am always of the opinion that a written work is never complete without a thorough proofreading and editing. Proofreading and editing are like a twin-compass, one moves and drags the other along. Come to think of it, what comes to mind when you read a written piece that is error-infested? It could be very discouraging. That is the gap to be filled by proofreading and editing. What do we edit for? First, we edit for grammatical errors. Every language used has its inherent rules, and when violated, writing becomes incoherent. Second, we edit for structure. All we have in a written work are ideas expressed and develop through writing. Badly structured ideas are like pure water in dirty container. Third, for terminologies in a given field. Every piece of writing explores ideas in a given field. Every field has its own registers. A proofreader needs to be proficient in the given field to do a thorough proofreading and editing on a work. Lastly, from my experience, an editor needs to be patient - the task is always a difficult one, yet editing should never come before proofreading.
