As a basic maths teacher, I make sure the objective and content of each topic are fully understood before teaching the topic. This will enable to know the approach to use that will be easily understood by my students.
At times, I encourage discussions/verbalization and I also make a deliberate attempt to obtain from my pupil's examples within their environment. This makes the mathematics lessons relevant to their lives and enables the pupils to have a smooth transition from their everyday language to the language of mathematics.
