I teach verbal reasoning. It involves thinking about text, solving word problems, following written instructions to come up with a solution, spotting letter sequences and cracking letter- and number-based codes. Verbal reasoning exams are intended to test a child’s ability to understand and reason using words, and are a test of skill, rather than of learned knowledge. Verbal reasoning allows the examining body to build a picture of a child’s potential for critical thinking, problem-solving and ultimately, intelligence.
I have helped so many children master the verbal reasoning skills. These include reading, extensive vocabulary building, good spelling skills, strong understanding of antonyms and synonyms. To achieve this, I make them play word games and quizzes, encourage them to do crosswords and word searches, and play games like Scrabble; set spelling challenges, focusing particularly on common wrongly spelt words (there/their/they’re) and homophones (words that sound the same but are spelt differently).
